A Beautiful Fireplace Surround in Marble and Steel
My architect friend John Vinci has impeccable taste and a history in Chicago that is legend. When John was a student at IIT, Mies’s architecture building Crown Hall had just opened. John was a guide for prospective students. A young man from Nuremberg arrived and John gave him a tour of Mies’s new masterpiece. The young man was impressed and enrolled at the school. He and John became lifeong friends. His name was Helmut Jahn.
John picked this marble (framed by a trimmed steel angle) because Louis Sullivan employed it at the Auditorium Building Theater. It’s beautiful and I don’t know what it is called. I will ask him again. He specified it in the 1970s or early 1980s when they were few stone suppliers in Chicago.
The marble is monochromatic and stands in contrast to the colorful examples by Adolf Loos. The photographer Aaron Siskind’s prints adorn the walls.
