neighborhood notable for its rapid genesis from an open field into a dense, beautiful, upper-middle-class neighborhood in the 1880s. Luxurious and new at the time of the nearby Columbian Exposition, the building, four decades later, was crudely divided into apartments during the Great Depression. A contractor had recently restored its single occupancy but cut the rear off from light and air. In his defense, the yard was not much to look at: a gravel and dirt pad. We set out to create an inside/outside space employing effects with light, color and material that would create a volume for family, community and mindfulness. Inside meet outside. We demoed two stairs–one to the basement and a redundant service stair to a second floor landing–and built a new stair to the basement from the hallway. This stair travels under a blind corner cabinet in the kitchen (see photo).Thus, the new kitchen now has an unbroken, wrap-around countertop and a peninsula on the same plane. The kitchen peninsula completes the adjacent family room, the most used space in the house. &nbsp;Its post legs and stile and rail panels are some of our favorite details. The Roycroft green color complements the brass hardware. A huge thanks to a fabulous client whose high standards, patience, dedication and love of good design made this great little essay on "how do you want to live?" possible. Thus, it had to be seamless. “I want to be able to cook while talking to my dinner guests.” We needed to create a visual and link between the kitchen and dining rooms that did not exist before. “I would like a fireplace and a wrap-around porch.” We designed a new fireplace with a sawtooth brick detail similar to the new detail outside. Bookcases sport a surround-reveal detail that is one of our favorites. The color above the fireplace fades into a deep indigo as the light recedes. We expanded the footprint with a sympathetic addition to create a new living/dining/kitchen space focused on the patio and the ravine garden. The one car garage was enlarged for two. The wood siding and the horizontal rails of the new windows bring a freshness and timelessness that will serve the new home owners well into the future. The patient rooms were supplied through a hallway drop ceiling that acted as a plenum. A furnace with the fan head and coil sat at the end of a hundred foot long hallway. Of course, none of this today is allowed under the fire code. The drop ceiling was 7' - 8" above the finished floor so we had maybe 16 inches of headroom for new ductwork. Working with my in-house mechanical engineer, I was able design a system from a new furnace that would supply the hallways but there wasn't enough room to supply the patient rooms. We also needed a fire separation and new B Label fire doors with self-closers to separate the exit pathways–the hallways–from the patient rooms.I sized and designed new PTAC units for the rooms and an exterior masonry wall section detail to insert them in. He challenged us to design something “great.” He was also the son of the late, great architect Richard Neutra. I completed this as part of a small team at the last large corporate firm I worked at before beginning make Architecture Company. I made the working model without a shop and a colleague and I used it to refine our design work. I designed the louvered south elevation and the entry sequence including the stairs. Two entries figure at either end of long a served/service hallway with narrow service spaces placed along the demising wall and the broad living spaces on the window side. Rich, dark brown Kentucky Wood floor panels, laid in a running bond, stretch down the 90 foot long hallway and unify the generous layout. Custom millwork panels enliven and animate the walls. A custom table sits in front of a Roy Lichtenstein. Two custom round dining room tables (with sand bags hidden in their bases) allow for an adult’s and a children’s table at holiday dinners. A painted sideboard cantilevers from the wall. The bar is a stunning sodalite granite sandwiched between a textured stainless steel screen and lush velvet cabinet covers.
